Victorians are being urged to buckle down and prepare for their second major weather event in the space of a week, with dangerously high winds set to hit parts of the state's west.

State Emergency Service spokesman Stefan Delatovic said this squall could be worse than Monday's wild conditions, which caused 800 trees to be blown down and saw the SES flooded with 1100 requests for help.

"The greater Melbourne area might see gusts of up to 110km/h and if that's the case it may be more serious in terms of the damage it does inflict," Mr Delatovic said.

The Bureau of Meteorology have also issued a severe weather warning for damaging winds for people in the North East, South West, Central and Gippsland forecast districts.

Senior weather bureau forecaster, Terry Ryan, said he expected the winds to hit Melbourne at about 9am Friday.

"It will be one and off throughout the day and won't ease until midnight," Mr Ryan said.

"It will be out to the North East of the state by evening, where wind gusts of up to 120km/h are predicted."
